As you may already know, I've recently added Reformer Pilates classes to my schedule. I wanted to clarify what makes the Reformer such an amazing class modality and how it differs from the beloved Essentrics technique.
1️⃣ Pilates 101
Pilates is a revolutionary and safe exercise system that focuses on the mind-body connection, using either a mat or a range of equipment. Based on Joseph Pilates' principles, it has the power to transform your body's performance and overall well-being. The reformer is a popular piece of equipment that resembles a bed with springs for resistance, a sliding carriage, ropes, and pulleys. It is suitable for all levels of fitness and can be tailored to different needs: general fitness, injury-prevention or recovery, pre and post-natal, athletic conditioning, and the list goes on.
2️⃣ What makes it so special?
Its progressive & alignment-focused full-body exercises combined with deep breathing make it an extremely unique and effective workout. Its particular emphasis on lateral breathing not only helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency, but also vastly contributes to relieving stress.
3️⃣ How is it different from Essentrics?
As most of you may know, Essentrics is a dynamic stretching and strengthening workout designed to rebalance the full body, weight-free. Much like Essentrics, Pilates strengthens muscles without creating bulk thanks to its emphasis on dynamic and elongated movement.
That said, the added resistance from the reformer’s springs can effectively build strength throughout the body. Many of the exercises also include weight bearing on the arms and shoulders, which Essentrics does not typically provide. I’ve personally experienced noticeable improvements in the strength and stability of my core and arms as I became consistent in my personal practice.
⚖️ The Verdict
I think Essentrics and Reformer Pilates are brilliant workouts that can equally contribute to the body’s resilience through different means. The former focuses on gently restoring the musculoskeletal system back to its most balanced, mobile, and healthy state, whereas the latter deeply challenges strength while also contributing to the body’s overall well-being.
🤝 I believe they are complimentary workouts and highly recommend having both as part of your training regimen.
